Proposition 4, the Parental Notification Initiative, would amend the state Constitution to require a doctor to notify a parent of a teenager 48 hours before an abortion. Mandatory notification laws may sound good, but in reality, they put our most vulnerable teens at risk. In the real world, not all teens live in homes where communication is possible. Even in the best homes, many teens aren’t able to talk to their parents about something as sensitive as pregnancy.
Organizations that work with young women every day - such as Planned Parenthood, the California Teachers Association, and the California Medical Association, along with the ACLU of Northern California - have come together to once again lead the charge against this unnecessary and dangerous initiative. Our Campaign for Teen Safety will do just that.

ACLU-NC has been a long-term proponent of marriage equality in California, and it is a leading coalition partner in the “Equality for All Campaign” to defeat Prop 8: www.equalityforall.com. Prop 8 would take away the fundamental right to marry from same-sex couples to marry the person they love, and it would also write discrimination based on sexual orientation into our State Constitution.
