So long as we have enough people in this country willing to fight
for their rights, we'll be called a democracy.

Police Practices Committee launches investigation
of Chico Police Department
The Chico Chapter leadership became aware of an interesting lawsuit
that is now scheduled to go to trial in the United States District
Court for Eastern California early next year. This complaint, brought forth by
Chico Resident Jillian Shuler, and represented by Chico attorney
Larry Baumbach, accuses three Chico Police Officers of a
gross violation of her civil rights. The allegations are
shocking, and you can read the complaint here:

We have also had a report of another apparently improper arrest.
Consequently, our board and the legal and administrative staff at our home office
in San Francisco agreed, and authorized our chapter to further
investigate this matter.
Additionally, we are very concerned with the way the Butte County
Sheriff's Department has handled the release of some inmates, and
want to obtain feedback from the public in cases where they felt
unsafe or abandoned after their release.
To facilitate our investigation, we are now placing display
advertisements in local newspapers to cast a wide net and see what
response is received from our community.
If you know of anyone who has been subjected to this kind of
treatment, please refer them to our complaint page here:

We will appropriately research this information, and will then take
further appropriate action.

Chico ACLU launches a Spanish language web page!
The Chico Chapter of the ACLU again takes the lead. Our new
Spanish language web page provides a comprehensive resource to our
Hispanic population with important links and documents to assist
this underserved group in our community.
We are very proud and honored to be able to provide not only the web
page but to provide access to a fluent Spanish speaking board member
to assist our Hispanic and Spanish speaking immigrant population.
